Bird Sappington

Bird William Sappington

      Bird was born in 1906 in St Louis County Missouri and died in 1980 while residing in Kirkwood, Missouri. 

    In 1949 Bird began his law enforcement career by becoming a St Louis County Deputy Sheriff under Arthur Mosley. On 7-1-1955, Bird joined the newly formed St Louis County Police Department thereby becoming one of the original members. His DSN was # 130 and he was issued badge # 1.

    Most of Birds career with St. Louis County was spent as a traffic officer assigned to the second percent which at that time was located in Sunset Hills, Mo. Bird was also a reserve officer for the Des Peres Missouri Dept. Of Public Safety.

    After spending 20 years in law enforcement, Bird Sappington retired from the St. Louis County Police Department on 7-31-1969. It was at that time, that the County Police Department officially retired Badge # 1.
